| The
Missouri Veterans Commission has established a Minority
Veterans Program specifically to reach out to minority Veterans.
Minorities in the Jackson County area consist of Black or
African Americans, American Indians and Alaska Natives,
Asians, and Hispanics or Latinos. They are both male and
female ranging from the age of 18 to 65+. The
Kansas City Minority Veterans Program is a pilot project
(program) designed to reach out to these Veterans for the
purpose of informing them of benefits that they may be eligible
to receive. Included in this group are dependents of Veterans
who generally are considered least informed of benefits
possibly afforded to them. Services provided by this office
are:
To provide outreach to Veterans through community service
organizations, state agencies, homeless facilities, clergymen
and many other outlets serving Veterans. The
office also serves as an information resource station, providing
pamphlets and booklets on various state and federal benefit
programs.
A
Veterans Service Officer is also available to assist Veterans
with submitting claims, appealing claims, assisting with
pensions and other assistance that the Veterans may need.
Other
outreach efforts planned are Town Hall Meetings and Benefits
Awareness Fairs. Our
vision is to ensure that Minority Veterans in the Kansas
City area are informed about Veterans benefits. It our goal
to expand this program to St. Louis, Missouri’s largest
city serving minority Veterans.
If
you or anyone you know wants to support the ongoing operation
of this program or the establishment of a Minority Veterans
Program in St. Louis Missouri, please contact the Kansas
City Minority Outreach program at the Missouri Veterans
Commission. |
